Front Mount Intercooler (FMIC) for 1995-1999 Eclipse and
Talon:
This unit boasts many exclusive features:
Core: The core is a bar and plate design, and measures 24" wide, 9.3" tall, and 3.5" deep, for a total cooling volume of 781 cubic inches. Airflow is side to side (horizontal). This core has been computer designed to afford maximum cooling of charge air to engine while simultaneously allowing excellent pass-through of cooling air to car radiator. The core is very durable, and not easily damaged by road debris. The bar sections of the core can be polished for an attractive appearance.
Piping: Mandrel-bent and TIG welded, our piping is compact and simple due to this FMIC’s unique design. Black powder coated for long lasting beauty, the piping begins at the turbo compressor outlet and ends where the upper intercooler pipe enters the underhood area. HRC also offers upper intercooler piping, available separately.
Secure mounting system: CNC machined brackets and stainless steel studs firmly mount this FMIC to the chassis of the car. No drilling is required, and this FMIC will not shift or ‘droop’ over time.
Integral crossover section: This intercooler features a unique integral crossover passage incorporated directly into the intercooler case. The internal flow area of this passage is equivalent to a 2.5" round tube. We incorporated the crossover passage directly into the intercooler case to achieve the following advantages:
Improved cooling air path to intercooler: Some other FMIC designs place the crossover tube in front of the upper portion of the intercooler core, impeding cooling airflow to this section.
Improved cooling air path to radiator: Eliminating the crossover tube also allows better airflow over the top of the intercooler to the radiator, which improves engine cooling issues encountered with some other FMIC designs.
Access to hose couplers with front nose fully installed: Unlike many other FMIC designs, the HRC design allows access to hose couplers without removal of the front nose. This allows easy inspection and servicing of the couplers without time consuming complete nose removal.
Reduced airflow loss at inlet tank: Some other FMIC designs force the incoming air to perform a very tight radius 180-degree turn as it exits the crossover tube and enters the core. Our design provides a wide radius, very free flowing transition at this point.
Modifications to the front bumper reinforcement and front fascia are required to install this FMIC.

These cross-sectional drawings illustrate cooling airflow to the intercooler and radiator.
Some other intercooler designs use a crossover pipe. The drawing at left shows airflow patterns with such a crossover pipe. Cooling airflow to the radiator that would otherwise flow over the top of the intercooler is blocked by the crossover pipe. Airflow to the top portion of the intercooler is also affected.
The HRC FMIC is shown on the right. Its unique integral crossover passage is the semi-circular pipe seen at the bottom of the intercooler. With the new HRC FMIC, cooling airflow not only has a clear path to the entire intercooler core, a portion of the air can also flow over the top of the intercooler to assist in radiator cooling. This additional airflow to the radiator can make a critical difference in engine cooling and air conditioner efficiency.
The test data below is determined at a vehicle speed of 60 MPH. At higher
speeds, cooling efficiency will further improve. Two flow rate scenarios are illustrated: 400 HP and 600 HP. |
